Punching & Scoring

Brewer Cantelmo provides unique specialty services called punching and scoring.  Punching is as basic as punching holes into paper – similar to a three hole punch – only our punching is customized.  Select the number of holes and spacing between to perfectly match the screw post binding or ring mechanism that works best.  Based on the length of the binding side of the paper, the number of holes can range from 2 to 6 or even higher on particular sizes.  We will custom punch your pages to fit inside portfolios or folders that we produce here, or to match an existing configuration on your own product.

Brewer Cantelmo has a system for measuring the number of holes and where to place them. It isa 2 numbered sequence. The first number is the number of holes and the second number is the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the hole beneath it. For example, we would name the hole formation for a standard three ring binder as 3 – 4 ¼.  There are 3 holes and the spacing from the center of the top hole is 4 1/4" to the center of the middle hole. This measurement is also accurate from the center of the middle hole to the center of the bottom hole.

(For all projects to match punching patterns of a book we do not make – we recommend sending us a page to match – or the book itself to ensure a match. On books other than Brewer-Cantelmo made, not all holes are always punched the same distance from the page edge or with uniform distance between holes, which provides other reasons for obtaining a sample page.)

Scoring is the process of putting a partial cut (a kind of straight dent) into the side of the page to help it turn more easily.  A score runs the entire length of the page parallel to the binding so that the page can lay flat when it is turned over the binding material concealing the screws and posts.  Since the binding conceals 3/4" of the page, we recommend the score at 1".  If the page is particularly large, or the stock of the page is especially thick, we will occasionally recommend a double score – or even a triple score.  The second score will most often come at 1 1/8" and the third score at 1 1/4".  Please plan your image area with respect to these measurements.  Contact a salesperson to confirm these details.

All pricing for punching and/or scoring is per page.
